Isaac Newton (1642-1727).

Cut signature (‘Is. Newton’), c.1708.

34 x 56mm. Counter-signed by J[ohn] Stanley and J[ohn] Ellis, (minor stain to the right-hand side). Provenance: Laid down onto a 19th-century leaf bearing a contemporary inscription describing the signature as deriving from an 'official document' of 1708 (the leaf stained) — Sotheby’s, 28 May 1985, lot 769.

Isaac Newton’s signature, as Master of the Mint. Newton spent the last three decades in his life in London, serving as Master of the Royal Mint from 1700 to 1727. His signature is accompanied here by those of Sir John Stanley and John Ellis, Warden and Comptroller of the Mint respectively
