Albert Einstein (1879-1955).

Autograph correspondence card signed ('A. Einstein') to Wilhelm Wien, [postmarked Prague, 17 January 1912].

In German. Half page, 91 x 139mm. Provenance: by descent from Wilhelm Wien.

Sending a paper on thermodynamics for the Annalen der Physik. 'I am sending you a paper on thermodynamics for the Annalen, in which your radiation law and the law of photochemical equivalents are simultaneously derived'.

The paper is Einstein's 'Thermodynamic proof of the law of photochemical equivalence', published in Annalen der Physik 37 (26 March 1912). Although Einstein is here writing to Wilhelm Wien in his capacity as editor of the Annalen, he was also the author of Wien's law, which describes the spectrum of thermal radiation and is central to the paper Einstein is submitting. Wien had just been awarded the Nobel Prize for his work in this field. Martin J. Klein, A.J. Kox and Robert Schulmann (eds), Collected Papers, vol. 5, no. 339.
