Details
Albert Einstein (1879-1955).

Autograph letter signed ('A. Einstein') to [Otto] Juliusburger, Princeton, 24 January 1950.

In German, half page, 280 x 216mm. Envelope. Provenance: Stargardt, 4 July 2000, lot 521 (part of lot).

'The pursuit of truth is something which can really take the place of the religion of our fathers'. A letter of condolence on the death of Juliusburger's wife. 'She was a good, brave and devoted companion, and I can appreciate how lonely you feel in this cold and noisy world'. Einstein nevertheless urges Juliusburger to find consolation in 'quiet work, in which people like us always find refuge and comfort. The pursuit of truth is something which can really take the place of the religion of our fathers, if one only devotes oneself to it completely, as you do'. The works of the best thinkers of the past also constitute a homeland that one can never lose. Einstein expresses a willingness to be close to his friend in his bereavement, 'although I know well that no one can really be of help at such a time. May you withstand it well'.
