Albert Einstein (1879-1955).

Autograph sentiment signed ('A. Einstein'), [Berlin, December 1925].

In German, four lines on a half-leaf, 98 x 135mm, extracted from an autograph album (pen and pencil annotations, the former in French, indicating date and place).

'Die Gelehrten hätten als Avan-Garde des Friedens Wertvolles leisten können, als Landsturm wird man sie kaum mehr brauchen'.

An aphorism on the missed opportunity for the scholarly community in actively promoting peace, not merely in passively defending it: 'As the vanguard of peace, intellectuals could have achieved something valuable; as its home guard, they will hardly be of use to anyone'.
