Albert Einstein (1879-1955).

Typed letter signed ('A. Einstein') to [Otto Juliusburger], Princeton, 23 October 1941.

In German, half page, 279 x 216mm. Einstein's blind-stamped address at upper margin. Provenance: Stargardt, 4 July 2000, lot 521 (part of lot).

'Burning with enthusiasm' about meeting an old friend who has escaped from Nazi Germany. Einstein expresses his excitement at seeing Juliusburger, who has just arrived with his wife in New York as refugees from Nazi Germany: 'I am burning with enthusiasm at the prospect of conversing with you as in the old days. I would be delighted to see you with your family here at my house, preferably on a Saturday'. He suggests a date, and asks Juliusburger to send him a timely confirmation, so that he can be sure to be free.

Otto Juliusburger (1867-1952) was a distinguished psychiatrist and expert on Spinoza and Schopenhauer: he had been a close friend of Einstein's in Berlin since the years of the First World War, and remained there until his remarkably delayed emigration in the summer of 1941. This was to be their first meeting since Einstein's own enforced exile in 1933.
