Lot Essay

In the summer of 1980, England welcomed Australia for a one-off fixture to mark the 100th anniversary of Test Match cricket. The game was marred by poor conditions with the second day lost to rain and most of the third to bad-light, however Australia still managed to set England an imposing target of 370 with a day to go. GB and Mike Gatting eased English nerves as the former made 128 not out off 252 balls with this bat and the match finished in a draw. Gubby Allen wrote highly of his performance in Wisden: “Boycott showed his class in two typically determined innings. Technically he is head and shoulders ahead of anyone batting in England.” The drawn Test is notable for marking John Arlott’s final appearance as a commentator on Test Match Special.
