Lot Essay
After three years outside Test cricket, Trent Bridge, venue for the third Test against Australia in 1977, was the scene of GB’s recall. He scored 107 in England’s first innings off the bowling of Thomson and Pascoe, sharing a 6th wicket partnership of 215 with Alan Knott (135) that equalled England’s 6th-wicket record against Australia. He called his innings “the finest I have ever played” (Autobiography p. 177). His 80 not out in the 2nd innings contributed further to England’s victory by 7 wickets. He became the first England player in history to bat on all five days of a Test and less fortunately ran out Derek Randall in front of his home crowd.
