Lot Essay

Yorkshire's last match of the 1986 season was at Scarborough against Northants. Boycott had his mind on a final record. He "began the match with 931 first-class runs for the season and the prospect of completing 1000 for the twenty-fourth time in twenty-four years." He needed an achievable 69 runs more, only to be run out by his batting partner Jim Love for 61, leaving him 8 runs short (see The Autobiography, pp.263-64).
