Lot Essay

"A white dwarf star has approached near enough to allow its powerful gravitational pull to draw up everything not tied down." (Coronet Magazine)

This illustration was published, along with other Bonestell paintings, in a single magazine pictorial entitled "The End of the World," which appeared in the July 1947 issue of Coronet, a striking example of Cold War anxiety. As per Coronet, "[E]ven before physicists developed the atom bomb, astronomers knew of greater, if less immediate, threats to world safety. To bring you some of the results of their research, Coronet commissioned Chesley Bonestell, an artist and astronomer, to make the paintings on the following pages. In the opinion of experts, these are some of the catastrophes which may someday plunge the earth into chaos."
