‘[An explanatory text on the Caprichos known as the] Ayala text of 1799-1803 is…clearly anti-clerical and specifically against monks: ‘Stupid monks stuff themselves in their refectories and make fun of the world; they have nothing to do but be hot (in heat)! Goya's three preparatory drawings for this work are also clarifying. One of these (Prado No. 443) draws an analogy between eating and sexual indulgence. Another (Prado No. 20), entitled: Dream. Of some men who eat us shows the monks being served a head on a platter, a still more explicit anti-clerical attitude. This scene appears even more horrifying because of the slanting smiles which both the fawner and the waiter address to the eaters whose haggard features are impervious to any expression of pleasure or satisfaction.’
