Lot Essay

Prado manuscript: She who wants to let herself be caught never will escape.

Biblioteca Nacional manuscript: A beautiful dancer flees in vain from the many large birds who pursue her: The boldest of these or the one using the worst language, raised on the shoulders of the others, will fall on top of her, sooner or later.

‘The word ‘pajarracos’, which we have translated literally as ‘large birds’, also has a colloquial meaning, probably meant here, of ‘low, cunning, designing fellows.’

Johnson, R. S., Francisco Goya, Los Caprichos, R.S. Johnson Fine Art, Chicago, 1992, p. 170.
