Lot Essay

‘The violence of this scene, in sharp contrast to most of the other Caprichos, anticipates the scenes of murder and rape which eventually appear in Goya’s Desastres de la Guerra. It has been suggested that one of the abductors is wearing the robe of a monk. Thus, this whole scene could be interpreted as an attack on the sometimes violent and illicit activities of the religious orders in Spain. The sentiment of passions unleashed in this scene is further highlighted by the violent contrasts of blacks and whites.’

Johnson, R. S., Francisco Goya, Los Caprichos, R.S. Johnson Fine Art, Chicago, 1992, p. 42.
