Colonel Leonard Messel was an avid fan enthusiast, in 1920 he served as the Master of the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers. For the collection see N. Armstrong, Fans from the Fitzwilliam: A Selection from the Messel-Rosse Collection, Cambridge, 1985.
