The majority of the famed Messel-Rosse Collection of Fans is in the permanent collection of the Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge. Comprising 727 individual peices, it was acquired through the National Heritage Memorial Fund from Lord Snowdon's mother in 1984. Colonel Leonard Messel was an avid fan enthusiast, in 1920 he served as the Master of the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers. For the collection see N. Armstrong, Fans from the Fitzwilliam: A Selection from the Messel-Rosse Collection, Cambridge, 1985.
