Lot Essay

Messel's first use of masks in his theatre design began with, what was at the time, a prestigious commission to make ‘masks and symbols’ for the Diaghilev Ballet production of , in 1925. These masks were later exhibited at the Claridge Gallery where they were noticed by the theatre impressario C.B.Cochran (1872-1951), who subsequently commissioned Messel to make masks for his revues from 1926 onwards. The present lot compares to a mask now in the Messel collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum (see S.232-2006).
