James Matthews is listed in 1822 at 62 Richmond Row, Brighton trading as a plasterer. A Victorian table with identical simulated Siena marble top, with label for James Matthews was sold Christie's, South Kensington, 19 July 2000, lot 18 (£5,875 including premium).
Lord Snowdon's father Ronald Armstrong-Jones acquired the former ironmongers shop at 20 Pimlico Road in 1952, and Snowdon took over the ground floor as a studio on 29 September 1952, where he operated as 'Armstrong-Jones' until his marriage to H.R.H. The Princess Margaret in 1960.

In fairly good condition overall. With the inevitable knocks, marks, losses, scratches and shrinkage cracks, consistent with age and use. The decoration rubbed, and with losses and flaking overall, revealing bare timber in places, and other areas of refreshment to decoration. Minor losses to frieze and carving. The frieze in composition. The left hand support slightly loose and will require securing.
