Lot Essay
A related painted enamel teapot and stand is discussed and illustrated by David S. Howard in A Tale of Three Cities, Canton, Shanghai and Hong Kong, Three Centuries of Sino-British Trade in the Decorative Arts, Sotheby's, 1997, p.157, no. 202. The author notes that these pieces drew inspiration from English silver originals.

The teapot: - The teapot has losses to the enamels in numerous places, each with an associated extensive network of crackles, the largest and deepest loss is to the shoulder below the rim and measures max. approx. 8 x 3.5 cm. - There is some restoration and over-painting to some areas of loss. - The spout has been broken and re-attached. - The tip of the spout has been restored.
The stand: - There are extensive losses to the enamels on the legs with associated chips and crackles. - One leg has been broken and re-stuck.
The detachable central section: - There are crackles to the enamels.
