A similar 'hen and chicks' dish (21 cm. diam.) in the Butler Family Collection is illustrated in Seventeenth Century Chinese Porcelain from the Butler Family Collection, Alexandria, Virginia, 1990, p.67. no. 29, where it states that the distinctive design is based on the woodblock illustrations in the Cao ben shu pu, or The Grass Poetry Manual, published in China in 1621. A similar hexagonal dish with bird design (20.5 cm. diam.) also in the Butler Family Collection is illustrated in ibid., 1990, Alexandria, Virginia, p.68, no. 30.

We have sought to record changes in the condition of this piece acquired after its initial manufacture. All the dishes: - There is wear to the enamels consistent with age.
The Three Friends of Winter dish: - There is an area of gilt lacquer repair to the rim (approx. 4.5 cm. wide) with an associated hairline extending down the cavetto. - There is a paper label to the base reading 'No. 26'.
The cockerel dish: - It has been broken into several pieces and restored. - There are two chips to the rim which have been touched up with a clear substance (approx. 1 cm.).
The bird and flower dish: - There is an L-shaped crack to the rim (approx. 14 cm. long). - There is a fine hairline to approx. 1/4 of the lower body associated with a firing flaw. - There are frits and chips to the rim consistent with age. - There is a paper label to the base reading "No. B-13 Made in Japan".
