Details
The group comprises: a hexagonal dish decorated to the centre with the Three Friends of Winter, suihan sanyou, with bamboo sprays, a pine tree, and prunus flowers in a vase, the cavettos with floral sprigs, the reverse with a seal mark in underglaze blue; a hexagonal dish decorated with a bird perched on a large peony tree amongst bamboo surrounded by flower sprays; and a dish decorated with a hen and six chicks, one on her back, below a cockscomb and bamboo sprays, the reverse with a seal mark in underglaze blue.
All three dishes: 8 in. (20.3 cm.) diam.

A similar 'hen and chicks' dish (21 cm. diam.) in the Butler Family Collection is illustrated in Seventeenth Century Chinese Porcelain from the Butler Family Collection, Alexandria, Virginia, 1990, p.67. no. 29, where it states that the distinctive design is based on the woodblock illustrations in the Cao ben shu pu, or The Grass Poetry Manual, published in China in 1621. A similar hexagonal dish with bird design (20.5 cm. diam.) also in the Butler Family Collection is illustrated in ibid., 1990, Alexandria, Virginia, p.68, no. 30.
