Lot Essay

"Of those who have been following the ideals of Abanindranath, Asit Kumar Haldar comes next to Nandalal [Bose] in respect of reputation and standing. If correctly assessed, it will be seen that of all the early followers of Abanindranath, the originality or artistic genius of Asit Kumar, is somewhat different from Nandalal and the other artists. Even though intellectually associated with the Indian tradition, it really did not go deep into his heart. Essentially he belongs to the contemporary period. None of his colleagues knew so intimately the contemporary Bengali writers, as did Asit Kumar. He could easily establish an intimate contact with the modern groups of progressives" (B.B. Mukherjee, 'Asit Kumar Haldar', Lalit Kala Contemporary 1, New Delhi, 1962, p. 44).
