Lot Essay

Hofmaier described only one proof impression of the first state as printed on Japan paper, which once belonged to Beckmann's publisher Reinhard Piper and was signed and inscribed Probedruck Frauenbad 1. Zustand. The present impressions once bore a similar inscription, which was subsequently erased and partially overwritten with Beckmann's signature in German script and is no longer legible. Hofmaier records one other signed proof impression without specifying the paper type, formerly from a private collection in Hamburg, which may be the present one.
