Lot Essay

This etching is closely related to a drawing created probably in-situ in a field hospital behind the Eastern front on 9 September 1914. The drawing, signed, dated and titled Bei der Operation, was also in the Hegewisch Collection and sold at Christie's, London, on 7 March 2026 (Lot 981; £35,500).
