Lot Essay

"I donated this dress to support Smart Works - a brilliant charity that works to empower women by helping them with outfits and coaching to nail that job interview! Everyone needs a great outfit!" - Grayson Perry

The Turner-Prize winning artist Grayson Perry started by purchasing his alter-ego Claire’s outfits from high street shops or designing them himself. However, for the past decade he has primarily worn clothes designed for Claire by fashion students at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. They take part in an annual competition to design new dresses for Claire, where Perry judges their work, gives awards and then purchases up to 20 of their creations each year. He is a vocal and active supporter of the art school. He is currently chancellor of UAL and has served as UAL Governor and visiting lecturer. Perry commissioned this 'party dress' from one of the fashion students circa 2010 during one of the courses he teaches.
