Lot Essay

In Room 131, Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge, Phillipsburg, N.J., June 21, 1974,pools of light are caught in several articles of unkempt clothing, transforming them into bundles of radiant drapery fit for a classical painting. Folds of rumpled khaki seem to take on an ethereal glow that feels out of place against the muted mustard stripes of the stiff motel bedding, a trenchant example of Shore’s ability to elevate the mundane.
