Lot Essay

In Natural Bridge, New York, July 31, 1974 the harmonic concurrence of a dinged-up Plymouth Valiant and the adjacent overgrown yard demonstrates Shore’s masterful approach to capturing the slightest of idiosyncrasies in his surroundings. The cars that appear in Shore’s photographs seem to have an almost human quality, with personalities that reflect their settings. These vehicles represent the overarching conceit of Uncommon Places: they are the sentinels of the many roads Shore must take in order document the American culture built around them.
