Lot Essay

Abigail Deakin is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores movement, memory, and cultural ritual through painting. Working between observation and recollection, she uses gesture, colour, and atmosphere to create images that sit between figuration and abstraction.

This work belongs to an ongoing series inspired by Mexican jaripeo and charro traditions. Developed from direct experience, photography, and memory, the paintings focus on the physical exchange between horse and rider, using fragmentation and motion to evoke the energy of the arena. Rather than documenting specific events, the works seek to capture fleeting moments of tension, rhythm, and transformation.
