Lot Essay
Anastasia Lebedev moves fluidly across artistic disciplines - drawing, pottery, textiles and jewellery - yet returns time and again to the luminous allure of cyanotypes, where history and modern experimentation collide in brilliant Prussian blue. This photographic process, discovered by Sir John Herschel in the nineteenth century, laid the groundwork for the earliest forms of photography before finding new purposes in Victorian botanical prints and engineering blueprints. It is this spirit of discovery that fuels Anastasia’s work. Inspired by the trailblazing botanist Anna Atkins, whose 1843 cyanotype book transformed science into art, she breathes new life into the medium, layering contemporary materials and daring techniques over a foundation steeped in heritage. Her cyanotypes, offered here following successful appearances in past Christie's auctions, bloom with botanical shapes and abstract whispers, bridging centuries while feeling utterly of the moment. Each piece is both tribute and transformation - a conversation between past and present in deep indigo tones.
