This image stages the dinosaur models of Crystal Palace Park as an antique travel photograph or postcard, documenting a place that never quite existed - a hybrid history, an image outside of time.

Unveiled in the 1850s, the sculptures were celebrated as pioneering scientific reconstructions. Today we know them as beautifully inaccurate: imaginative renderings of animals that never had these exact forms. They belong less to deep time itself than to the story of how science imagines and revises itself, fluid and provisional.

The true survivors of deep time in this photograph are not the dinosaurs at all, but the ducks paddling, unremarked, in the pond in front of them: The living descendants of the dinosaurs.
