Lot Essay
Neha Abid Sayeed is an art historian who studied History of Art at the University of Edinburgh and completed her MA at The Courtauld Institute of Art, where she specialised in Art and Empire in the Indian Ocean World, c. 1800–1900.
Her artistic and scholarly interests converge in her engagement with architectural heritage and colonial histories. A key example is her 2019 drawing series, Study of Frere Hall, Karachi, Pakistan, created from life using pen and ink on paper, capturing the intricate details and layered past of one of Karachi’s most iconic colonial-era buildings. This visual study later informed her academic research at The Courtauld which focused on colonial architecture in Karachi. Frere Hall featured as a central case study, allowing her to explore the building’s significance within broader narratives of empire, urban space, and cultural memory.
Outside of her academic work, Neha enjoys painting and drawing, particularly life studies. Her art offers a space where historical narratives meet personal perspective, inviting viewers to consider the intersections of memory, empire, and everyday beauty.
