Lot Essay

Liang Yuwei, a native of Guangzhou, Guangdong province, who styled himself as Hongfei, Hangshu, and Hangxue, earned the title of jinshi in the 15th year of Guangxu reign (1889). After his resignation, he settled in Guangzhou living on painting, the subjects of which were mainly flowers and then landscape in his later years and specialized in seal carving.

Gu Zhihuai, who styled himself as Huaitang and Shixuan, was from Nanhai, Guangdong. He likes to study calligraphy, paintings, poetry, and seal carving. He is good at various calligraphic styles and is an expert in the regular and clerical script. Served as an executive member of the Hong Kong Chinese Art Club, he is currently the honorary permanent consultant of the association and a member of Hong Kong Calligraphy and Arts Association and Hong Kong Association of Amateur Calligraphers.
