Born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang in 1897, Chen Dingshan, formerly known as Qi, was also known as Qu and styled as Xiaode, Gongxi, Dieye, and Zuilingsheng. Celebrated for his poetry as well as landscape and flower paintings, Chen was also a modern calligrapher, art historian, writer and industrialist. He composed his works with layers of ink, bright colours, and meticulous brushwork, resulting in their vividness and sense of depth. Through depicting the wonders and mysteries of nature, Chen expressed his yearning for a tranquil life.
