ZHANG YUZHAO (1823-1894)
Eight-character Calligraphic Couplet in Running Script
A pair of hanging scrolls, ink on red paper
Each scroll measures 170.3 x 37 cm. (67 x 14 58 in.)
Signed, with two seals of the artist

NOTE:
Zhang Yuji, courtier at the end of the Qing Dynasty, devoted himself to education, literature and calligraphy in his later years. Zhang’s calligraphy was a blend of northern monuments and southern posters, creating his own style called the “Zhang Style”. This influenced the late Qing calligraphic scene and was praised by Kang Youwei as “unparallel in the last thousand years.”
