I’m always looking for new ways to repurpose old ideas. Like taking existing materials, formats, objects or brand identities and deconstructing them, stripping them raw, then putting them back together as reimagined versions of themselves, creating a sense of new life and purpose through my own lens. I take what I want and leave what I don’t, and find something creative to do with the parts I can’t get rid of. Gucci Ghost was born out of this spirit. To be able to take something so established, flip it on its head, and give it a whole new meaning is powerful. It’s the outsider, the underdog, finding a way in and wreaking havoc, like going to war with the establishment wielding your creativity as your only weapon. Pirate Radio, my collaboration with Superplastic, was inspired by this idea.
Collaborating with Superplastic on the Janky figure was exciting to me because I got to reimagine the Janky character as Gucci Ghost, a pirate wielding his paint marker as his weapon. The multilayered background explores the evolution of analog formats into the digital space, in another example of how dismantling and reimagining has propelled us forward into new worlds. I used first generation VHS moments, social media and apps, along with taped audio of me making a never released song as the medium to create a degraded video patina, my virtual cracked paint.
