The 'Tema e Variazioni' or 'Themes and Variations' design has been produced in at least three hundred and fifty variations. The present plates incorporate the image of a woman, identified by Fornasetti as Natalina 'Lina' Cavalieri, the fin-de-siècle opera singer.

The set of ten plates with minor stacking wear to the fields with some wear more visually apparent. One plate (numbered 17) with a chip to the rim at 3 o'clock (1⁄4 in. approx.) with associated hairline extending into the field 11⁄2 in. long approx.
