Lot Essay

The inspirtation for Piero Fornasetti's Vegetali plates stems from masterworks by renown Italian Renaissance artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526 or 1527-1593) who died in Fornasetti's home town of Milan. Acrimboldo influenced surrealist artists of the 20th century such as Fornasetti, in addition to Salvador Dali and Max Ernst.
