Lot Essay

Zuzek was an avid gardener and maintained an expansive garden at her island home. But when it came to creating her iconic floral watercolors, she often looked northward for inspirations. Reminiscing on childhood memories of collecting wildflowers with her sister in northern New York, Zuzek went so far as to profess "I still like northern flowers better". Here, woodland lily-of-the-valley tumble across the page, "Lilly" artfully hidden amongst the leaves.

The lily-of-the-valley pattern here showcases Zuzek's mastery of the watercolor form and understanding of the printmaking process. The crisp lines of the flowers were achieved through use of rubber cement as a frisket, or resist. This technique creates a rare precision that translated well to textiles.
