Lot Essay

In a 2021 interview with WLRN Radio of Miami and South Florida, Zuzek's daughter Martha de Poo talked about her mother's playful designs. In regards to Gallery's whimsical animal pattern, de Poo said "I think she amused herself that way. That was her interior life." This popular pattern, depicting a portrait gallery of various animals in period costume, was printed in 11 color ways and used on a myriad of garments including a unisex bathrobe. The watercolor includes a collaged on cameo, yet another reminder that Zuzek's paintings were not meant to end at the edge of the paper, but rather repeat indefinitely.
