Lot Essay

As Lilly Pulitzer was known for her sundresses, many of the prints she chose from Zuzek's work included a sun face motif. The sun face was Key West Hand Print Fabrics' logo and appeared on their designs in many variations for over a decade. In addition to its eponymous chickens, this watercolor also includes various types of flowers including black-eyed-susans, which are native to the American northeast. Zuzek was raised on a farm in upstate New York and despite spending most of her adult life in Florida, she still professed a preference for northern flowers.
