Lot Essay

After a 1963 copyright dispute, all of Zuzek's designs were registered and had the symbol ©Key West Hand Print Fabrics, Inc. located on the selvedge. These included designs used by Lilly Pulitzer. Following Emilio Pucci's lead, 'Lilly' was incorporated into the design. At the right of this watercolor, just below the center line, a segment of the design is circled and marked 'add a Lilly.' The pink lines inside the floral shape were turned into letters before this painting became a print.
A dress with this bold print, in a pink, blue, and orange color way, was featured in a 1972 Lilly Pulitzer advertisement in Vogue magazine.
