Lot Essay

According to Lauris Mason, George Bellows signed and titled portions of most editions, probably when he sold them or consigned them to dealers. No records were kept and it is impossible to know what percentage of the almost eight thousand impressions pulled were signed by the artist. As the estate released unsigned prints by the artist, the procedure was for his wife Emma Bellows to write "Geo Bellows" and then her initials "ESB." This practice was continued by her daughter, Jean Bellows Booth, "JJB."
