Lot Essay

George Bellows depicted a series of scenes from the billiard rooms of the Players Club at 16 Gramercy Park, a social club that he frequented. Of the four lithographs, this is the most detailed composition in the group. The central player turns his back on the well lit field of action as he chalks his cue stick and smiles confidently.
