Lot Essay

Since the late 1960s, Phyllida Barlow has focused on the physical experience of handling materials, which she transforms through layering, accumulation and juxtaposition. Barlow’s direct and practical processes of making utilise readily available materials such as cardboard, cement and plaster, polystyrene, timber and paint.

Awarded a CBE for Services to Art in the 2016 New Year Honours, Phyllida Barlow is one of the most preeminent sculptors working in Britain today. In 2014 she was awarded the Duveen Galleries Commission at Tate Britain and produced critically acclaimed ‘dock’, her largest work to date. Barlow has been chosen to represent Britain at the Venice Biennale in 2017.
