Lot Essay

Billy Childish is known for a prodigious range of activities – from garage punk musician, poet, writer and publisher to artist. For the last decade he has devoted most of his time to being in his studio, and the resulting paintings have developed in scale and range of expression.
The River Garden is from a series of works by Childish, each one is unique as the artist has hand-coloured the print with watercolour onto the etching.
Many of Childish’s paintings are connected to the locales of the Thames and Medway estuaries. The estuary has a particular resonance as a place where water (time) flows in both directions, and where eddying currents are met with stillness and relative tranquillity.
Recent international solo exhibitions include the Carl Freedman Gallery, London; Neugerriemschneider, Berlin and Lehmann Maupin Gallery, New York.
Childish has a solo show in Dallas at Goss Michael Foundation running until May 2017.
