Lot Essay

Sir Howard Hodgkin was one of Britain’s most important painters and printmakers. He studied at the Camberwell School of Art, followed by the Bath Academy of Art. He served as a Trustee of the Tate Gallery and the National Gallery, won the Turner Prize in 1985 and was knighted in 1992.
Spots Before My Eyes is from a series of hand-painted prints which reference Andrew Marvell’s 17th Century poem The Garden.
Using extensive layering and complex print processes, Sir Howard created gestural marks and vibrant colours. Combined with an evocative title, the print invites contemplation about encounters with nature.
We were very saddened to hear about Sir Howard’s death earlier this year and will always be grateful for the wonderful generosity and kindness he showed the charity.
