Lot Essay

American artist Jeff Burton began his career as an adult film photographer. He is renowned for his intimate yet suggestive images of gay men as well as his work on high profile fashion brands. He has collaborated with Tom Ford and Yves Saint Laurent among others. His work has been featured in French Vogue, Vogue Hommes International, Vanity Fair and The New York Times.
Burton’s photography has been exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Barbican Centre in London, and many other national and international museums.
Untitled (Swim Trunks) is the cover image from his 2000 book Dreamland. Standing in puddles of discarded underwear, sturdy male legs tower overhead. The men’s faces are not visible, which allows the viewer to weave their own fantasy about what is taking place.
