Lot Essay

Ian Davenport was born in Kent in 1966. He graduated from Goldsmiths College of Art in 1988 and as one of the generation of Young British Artists, participated in the seminal exhibition Freeze.
In 1991 he was shortlisted for the Turner Prize and since then has exhibited extensively across the world. He has undertaken several large-scale murals, including the 50-metre-long mural under the bridge on Southwark Street, London.
Davenport is primarily known for his exploration into the nature of materials and colour; in this unique print he investigates colour and surface qualities. Three-dimensional effects are subtly created through the use of fluid lines which form puddles of colour at the bottom of the composition.
His abstract paintings are made by pouring and dripping household paint onto prepared canvases, boards and aluminium panels, tilted so that gravity and the consistency of the paint determine the final composition.
