Lot Essay

This iconic sculpture of a penis punctured by multiple pins by HIV positive artist Paul Chisholm explores his feelings about HIV infectiousness and the ‘ownership’ of transmission. He chooses to depict his vision of HIV in what he describes as: ‘It’s most violent and disturbing form, in part from its scientific depiction and also from what I interpret as affiliations to a voodoo doll.’
The work asks the viewer to question what a virus is and explore the responsibility of ownership over the transmission of HIV. The historic, political and personal enduring and turbulent emotions of HIV are encapsulated in this sculpture.
