Lot Essay

Maggi Hambling is one of Britain’s foremost contemporary artists. Her Wall of Water VII monotype is a unique work on paper from a series that followed her exhibition of Wall of Water monotypes at The Hermitage, St Petersburg, Russia in 2013 and her Walls of Water exhibition at the National Gallery, London in 2014.
Perhaps best known for her compelling portraits, paintings of the sea and her public sculpture, less familiar, but equally significant, are her dynamic and sensuous works on paper.
A retrospective of the artist’s works on paper was recently held at the British Museum, and is also the subject of a book published last year by Lund Humphries ('Maggi Hambling: Touch').
Hambling’s new exhibition of paintings and sculpture, EDGE, is at Marlborough Fine Art, London until 13 April 2017.
Hambling was honoured at the Harper’s Bazaar 2016 Women of the Year Awards for her ‘outstanding contribution to art’.
