Lot Essay

Uno Hoffmann was born in Canada in 1955, but raised in Stockholm, Sweden for the first few years of his life. He studied architecture at the University of Toronto, after attending the University of Tel Aviv. He began his painting career prior to his studies in architecture, and had his first major solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (Museu Gulbenkian) in Lisbon when he was 24 years old.
Hoffmann’s background in architecture, printmaking, design, film and photography inform his artistic work. His explorations in photography resulted in a number of collaborations with established photographers, illustrators, and writers. These include Yuri Dojc, Paul Borges and Steven Maier. His painting practice merges American Abstract Expressionism with Modern European Neo-Expressionism.
Hoffmann has had numerous solo exhibitions worldwide including at the Museum of Modern Art Stockholm, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Centre de Cultura Contemporania de Barcelona and the Geffen Contemporary Art Museum in LA.
