Chinese School, circa 1828
The Hongs at Canton with the British and Dutch factories in residence
oil on canvas
1138 x 16in. (28.8 x 40.7cm.)
The view shows the hongs remodelled after the fire of 1822. The pagoda on Chunqua's factory to the left corner of Old China Street features in a Chinnery sketch dated 1827 and has gone in the 1830s, following Chunqua's bankruptcy and suicide in 1830 (see P. Conner, The Hongs of Canton, Western Merchants in South China 1700-1900, as seen in Chinese export paintings, London, 2009, p.129).

The Spanish, American, British and Dutch factories are depicted with flying flags. The factories of Britain and the Netherlands to the east of Hog Lane have projecting porticoes and the pediments are decorated with their country's national arms. To the west of the American factory, separated by New China Street, is the factory of Chungqua.
