HMS Spider was a six-gun schooner built at Chatham in 1835 to a design by Sir Robert Seppings. She served in South America before becoming an engine fitters' vessel at Plymouth in 1855. HMS Rose was a wooden sloop built in 1821. She was on the South American station between 1838 and 1842. The ships are seen off the downtown central district (Centro) of Rio de Janiero, on the western shore of Guanabara Bay.
